  1. GNU is Not Unix. It’s a recursive acronym that symbolises all tools that do the same (or more) that the Unix common set of tools does, but are all free (as in freedom) and open source.

    Linux is the kernel (written originally by Linux Torvalds) maintained by a large community and both together form the GNU/Linux which is the complete OS.

    On top of it you have Gnome, KDE, WindowMaker and on top of that still you have OpenOffice, Firefox, Thundebird and all tools that you may know from use.
